The Bible: everything I need for whatever problem I’ve got. It has encouragement and verses to help. What to know and what to do, it has the answer. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a great go to passage for so many areas of life, including wanting to work on overeating.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3: 5-6 NASB

Here are 2 verses for daily living, or for things that are challenging. Or for struggling with how to beat the battle with overeating and bingeing; get rid of food addiction problems, what to eat and when, and all things in-between. 

There are heaps of opposite views about food, especially when written by qualified professional people.  It’s hard to know what is the right thing to eat. How often to eat? Is it true that paleo is how I should eat? Is it true that whole food plant-based is how I should eat? Or clean eating? Or just cut back on what I already eat? Cut out certain foods for the rest of my life? Follow rules because they are what works best, count calories, weigh food, go the intuitive eating route, just cross my fingers and hope for the best? Kill the carbs and ban the grains and get rid of the bread? Get rid of sugar? Don’t eat anything that comes out of a box? Live on lettuce?

Does one way fit everybody? We’re all different. God made us different on the outside and just because we’re the same on the inside doesn’t mean that what works for me will work for somebody else. How come some birds eat seeds. Some eat fruit. Some eat insects. Some a mix of things. I read this on the internet “while the general digestive tract is the same for all birds, the size and shape of different organs, particularly the crop and gizzard, will also vary for different bird species”. So there are parts of different bird species that are different but they, generally speaking, have the same “general digestive tract”.

So why does one way of eating have to fit every human being? This is why Proverbs 3:5-6 is a good verse for me to meditate on as I make changes in my life’s struggle with food. I am not the same as some people, but am with other people. What is best for me – well God knows what that is. I might think I do but He knows better than me. Hence getting off my own throne and letting God take charge.

Proverbs 3: 5-6 gives 4 statements that, when put together, make a strong truth.
Statement 1: Trust. 

TRUST: confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or other sound principle of another person.

Trust who? The LORD. Trust Him just a little bit, or when I feel like it? No. Trust Him with ALL my heart. Not a half-hearted trust. Not a maybe trust. But an “I trust You no matter what” kind of trust. I can truly let go of my agenda when I know God is in control. To trust God is to believe that He is trustworthy. Totally trustworthy. Not sometimes, but EVERY time. 

Can I trust Him to lead me along and show me how to eat, what to eat, when to eat, how much to eat, when to enjoy, when to be careful, when to avoid? Trusting Him over the world’s food/dieting wisdom is the best step I can take in my life. Trust Him for His help with overeating.

Statement 2: DO NOT lean on your own understanding.

LEAN: rely, rest on, or support oneself. 
UNDERSTANDING: discernment, insight, intelligence.
My own understanding: fallible, limited, sometimes right and sometimes wrong; sometimes based on my bias and how I feel at the time. Is my dependence on what I think, or what God thinks? Am I influenced by my view, or by God’s Holy Spirit? His wisdom and truth outshines the world’s. Am I wise in my own eyes? Am I believing the wisdom of the world, or am I looking beyond myself and looking to God to give me His understanding?

I might like what this book says and what that book says but what about what God’s Book says? I need to rest in God’s wisdom and God’s direction. And I need to release my own views and opinions and be careful what I accept from the world about food and overeating instead of getting my guidance from God’s Holy Spirit.

Statement 3: Acknowledge Him in ALL my ways.

WAYS: walk, journey, path, road.
ACKNOWLEDGE: be aware of
Wow. ALL my ways. This is daily being conscious of His leading about working on my overeating, and my food choices, and especially my portion sizes. I need to be aware of Him when I think about preparing food and sitting down and eating; the journey to a healthy size and a healthy body. He formed me and created me and I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Does not the Potter have the right to work and fashion and position and decorate me, the clay in His hands (Jeremiah 18:1-6)? It has to be a daily trusting that He knows best.

Statement 4: And He will make your paths straight.

STRAIGHT: smooth, right, to be level; to declare right, to be tranquil, to be beaten out flat.
The only way I will know that I am doing this His way is to apply Proverbs 3: 5-6 every day. Not me but Him. More of Him and less of me. He leads and I follow.

What will be the result of trusting Him totally, not relying on my own wisdom (or the wisdom of the world); relying on Him daily? He will direct my path. I won’t be in the wrong place mixed up in worldly wisdom about food.. I will be exactly where He wants me to be doing this how He wants me to do it, and the result will be freedom, obedience, health and peace.

In the process of trusting and believing my faith will grow. I will see how much God cares about this area of my life. My faith will grow because I will be handing over my life and my eating to the One who knows what is best for me.
