Being fat used to make me cry. Overeating made me miserable. Solution: go on a diet and lose weight. If it had been that simple I would have done it a long time ago. Trying to figure out why I needed food so much – I hadn’t been able to really see it all clearly. Oh I had a very unhappy childhood sure – but is it all connected to that? What else could it be?

Is every person that had a very unhappy childhood have a problem with food, or booze, or drugs? I have no idea. Overeating was a problem before I became a Christian and after as well. I reached my highest weight after I became a Christian. Overeating filled empty places and spaces and just plain made me feel better.

The devil knows our weak areas. He knows how we’re feeling.  He loves to keep us defeated, dejected, hopeless, unhappy and lost. He knows how to make us feel like there is no way out, and that’s it’s always going to be a struggle with nowhere to turn.

Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack. 1 Peter 5:8 CEV

Satan is a sneaky devil. He will try and attack us with whatever he can and whenever he can to get our eyes off God and onto our problems and strongholds. We know he wants to overthrow God’s work in our life. We can’t let him. Paul said we “are not ignorant of his devices”.

lest Satan should take advantage of us. For we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Corinthians 2:11 MEV

Other translations uses phrases like:

  • we are not unaware NIV
  • we are familiar with ESV
  • we know very well NCV
Many translations use “not ignorant of”. Strong’s Concordance says: Definition: not to know (through lack of information or intelligence); by implication, to ignore (through disinclination)
I know myself. I know my weaknesses. So does that crafty old devil! I have no excuse not to know how Satan will work on those weaknesses in my life. Didn’t he do that with Judas and his love of money? Didn’t he try it on with Joseph and Potiphar’s wife? Or David with Bethsheba? I have no excuse for not recognising he will use whatever means he can to make me fail. But my God will help me. I need to put on the WHOLE armour of God to fight against him.

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— Ephesians 6:10-18 NKJV
